BOSTON (AP) — Late night service is returning to the MBTA.
The governor announced Monday that the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority will run all subway trains and the 15 most popular bus routes until 3 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The one-year pilot program will begin in March or April. If it is successful, it will be extended.
Gov. Deval Patrick tells The Boston Globe (http://b.globe.com/1g28zEl ) the service will be financed with $20 million in state money as well as corporate sponsorships.
The T currently ends service at 1 a.m., much to the chagrin of people who point out that bars and restaurants close at 2 a.m.
You couldn’t pay me to take the T, post last-call in Boston. I don’t do it after Red Sox games and I sure as shit won’t be riding the rails with the discards of Sissy K’s and Jose Mac’s. No thanks. Boston between the hours of 1 and 3am is no-mans land. I’ll take the Swahili phone shouting matches and the absorbent cab fare over Charlie and his sucker punching friends any day of the week. Screw it, I’d rather flat rate one of those horse drawn buggies in February than take the T.
